My ROCK-SOLID Coaching Method (RSCM)

Lisa Prodywus Teaching Philosophy for Marketing Courses
Online teaching philosophy best practices

I've taught college marketing courses online for eight years and worked in the marketing industry for over twenty years. Before teaching online college classes, I took graduate-level online marketing courses, which allowed me to improve my marketing skills and learn the strengths and weaknesses of the online learning environment. I've also written and developed college marketing courses in various LMS (Learning Management System) programs during this time.

There are several motivations for teaching marketing. Of course, my passion is always to "do" and "see" great marketing. Still, it is also a topic students can use for work, personal promotions, business, communities, and communications skills. With the interactive lessons and enthusiasm from the "coach," these can be life-changing skills for students to learn by incorporating innovation in education. As marketing changes, education can find the benefits in learning from new tools. At the core of my teaching philosophy lies the commitment to empower the students' minds and foster holistic growth in every learner.

Education can be exciting, interactive, and comprehensive as students work towards their educational goals. A positive teacher can help bring out the lifelong learner in everyone by showing the benefits of how and why marketing works. Education is about imparting knowledge and nurturing a passion for lifelong learning. To achieve this, I embrace The ROCK-SOLID Coaching Method (RSCM) as the foundation of my teaching approach. This technique incorporates a transformative philosophy that guides educators and students toward achieving educational excellence.

The ROCK-SOLID Coaching Method includes building respectful relationships (R) and connections with students, providing an outcome-oriented objectives (O) approach to learning from coaching techniques, providing constructive alignment checklist (C) for student feedback individualized for assignment goals, incorporating and building knowledge (K) integration in real-life situations. This method helps nurture the student's strengths for understanding their accomplishments, encourage lifelong learning, and build resilience from diligence and perseverance. SOLID is the process of assisting in delivering effective feedback to students, focusing on student strengths (S), improvement opportunities (O), sharing industry learning (L) with students, helping students implement (I) change opportunities, and demonstration (D) for improvement.

  • K-know the facts: analyze an assignment submission to coach performance

The SOLID process delivers effective feedback.

  • S-strengths: call-out strengths that can be used again for similar work

  • O-opportunities: identify opportunities to improve performance in the future

  • L-learning: share your learning and appreciation with the student

  • I-implement: coach learners as they plan to revise their work and implement opportunities

  • D-demonstrate: set a time and manner to resubmit or otherwise demonstrate improvement

As a teacher, all students must feel comfortable with the class atmosphere, participation, content, subjects, and assignments. This needs to be part of the design of the class, and it all starts with the teacher supporting the openness of the class and promoting supportive learning environments with activities for all students. I always use coaching in my classes and teachings, but there is always more to learn, improve, and grow, just like everything in life. My goal is to create an atmosphere where my students feel positive and motivated about the experience and course.

Every student is unique and needs to understand their strengths to develop more robust depth in subjects while highlighting the fulfillment and benefits of learning. As a coach, helping students understand their strengths on different topics in our class opens the atmosphere to learning, supporting, and encouraging class atmosphere.

The content, design, navigation, activities, and material used in my classes are created using the marketing techniques taught in the class - learning by example. A simple example of this technique is the weekly announcements, highlighting the weekly topic, dates, assignments, and total grade percentages for the week. It emphasizes the importance of weekly participation in the final goal for each student - what is essential to the student and to know it quickly. This helps to focus on the student's wants and needs to provide online support, consistency, and structure in the course. Another example is supporting and demonstrating the benefits of diversity with examples and structure/design in class. In my teaching strategies, it is essential for students to feel confident and comfortable with course expectations. Many of the assignments and activities in my class are implemented with real-world experience, and students can actively participate in marketing discussions, plans, strategies, and programs that can be used throughout their lives, careers, communities, and businesses.
